Sognefjord

So this is what we did yesterday. We caught the train from Bergen to Myrdal, then the Flåm railway to Flåm. From there we took an express boat along the Sognefjord back to Bergen, a boat journey of 250km and five and a half hours. All in all it was nearly nine hours of trains and boats, but it was simply fucking amazing.

We had a chance to see the lovely scenery from Bergen to Myrdal again. But getting photos was tricky. Usually I got something that looked like this

Although I did capture a little bit of good stuff

The volume of people waiting to get on the Flåm train at Myrdal was astonishing, and the train was crowded and noisy both from the shouted conversations and the almost continuous onboard announcements

But we were all there for the scenery, including the Kjosfossen, where the train made a stop to let people take photos and watch a couple of women dance around to piped music, pretending to be mountain spirits. It was all a bit silly 🙂

The scenery was pretty nice, but not a patch on what we’d seen the previous day, to be honest. However, we arrived at Flåm, which essentially exists to service people going on and off the train, whether via rail, cruise ship, ferry or road

Finally after having lunch and trawling the frankly shitty souvenir stores, dodging incredibly rude Italians, we boarded the very comfortable and smooth sailing Norled express boat. Then it was simply a matter of sitting back and enjoying hours of sheer loveliness

This is the fjord, with the pin marking Flåm

It’s a journey I would happily do again, and recommend to anyone. Norway really is amazing, and we will definitely try to come back!
