Iceland day six

Drive south past fertile farms and glacial rivers to Skogar and the Skogafoss waterfall. Visit the Thorvaldseyri farm, located at the foot of the infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcano, whose 2010 eruption shut down European airspace for over a week. Stop off at the Skogar Folk Museum before continuing to the dramatic Solheimajokull Glacier.

Fabulous scenery, rotten cold in my head 🙁 The ‘fog’ over the glacier volcano is actually ash still blowing around from 2010 eruption. The second lot of glacier photos is of the one covering Mt Katla “the witch” which is many times bigger than Eyjafjallajokull and is also well overdue for an eruption.

We had lunch at the folk museum but sadly i wasn’t in a fit state to appreciate the hard work put into it. Though i did look inside the little houses (real not replica) and Doug demonstrated how short pre- modern icelandic people were!

Puffins were at Cape DyrhĂłlaey, which is also the name of the small hotel we are staying at.

I decided to sit out the next day at the hotel, to try and get over the worst of the cold before the next leg of the journey. This hotel seriously needs some ‘do not disturb’ signs!

  1. I can’t get over how beautiful it is. I’d just want to sit on the shore all day (unless it’s too unbearably cold.) Reminds me a little of a trip we took to Canada once. Same sort of stark, vivid beauty that makes you feel so present in the world.
I’m so sorry you’re sick. Vacations require so much energy, to begin with. I hope it’s a cold of short duration.
